The Winner – Cleveland’s Top Dog (and other photos from the weekend)

Congratulations to Frankie – the winner of the Cuyahoga County Library’s photo contest and the new “Top Dog” of the library! Frankie will be featured on special-edition library cards coming out later this fall.

In honor of National Library Card Sign-Up Month, the CCPL ran a “Top Dog” photo contest, asking Clevelanders to submit their dogs for voting. This past Friday the top five dogs gathered at the Parma-Snow Branch of the library for the “Top Dog” event, which featured games, vendors and the final judging for the “Top Dog.” I was asked to be a judge in the contest, along with Chomps from the Cleveland Browns and Ann Schaefer, a volunteer from the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter.

Lining up to get their photos taken to be featured on a library card

Although it was a tough to choose between all of the great dogs that entered the photo contest, Frankie had the best library-related inspirational story. When Frankie began to lose control of his legs, his parents turned to the library to research what they could do for him. Their research led them to find a treatment that has helped him to walk again.

If you missed out on the event last Friday, you still have a chance to get your dog’s photo on your library card. Stop by the Parma-Snow Branch this Saturday, Sept. 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and they’ll photograph your dog and print you a custom library card.

It was a lot of fun being a judge at the event. I was so impressed with the turnout considering the crappy weather we had that day. So many cute dogs, I wished they all could win!

The weekend’s other big event – Love-A-Stray’s Big Splash

I was so impressed with how Clevelanders made the best of the awful weather we had this past weekend. After Friday’s fun event (which had a good turnout despite the impending rain and then the downpour that started right at the end), I decided to take Hunter to Love-A-Stray’s Dog swim at the Avon Lake Municipal Pool on Saturday afternoon, thinking there wouldn’t be many people there. I figured we would just walk around and check out the contests and vendors. Much to my surprise, there were tons of dogs and people enjoying the pool! Since Hunter loves the water, and cold weather, he had no issue with taking a swim in 60 degree weather. All the dogs were having such a blast that it really reinforced a great lesson that dogs can teach you: to make the best out of every situation. A little rain and cool temps didn’t spoil those dogs from having a good time!

Besides the swimming, there were also a number of contests including a dog bathing suit show!
