Despite my dreams of having a 5K running dog, I haven’t been able to get Hunter to go running with me. As I’ve mentioned, we’ve been having some issues on our walks, so there really hasn’t been a chance to try to focus on 5K training . I would very much like to live vicariously through you all though, so I wanted to make sure you were all up to date on the 5Ks going on this spring/summer for you and your dog.
The good thing for me is that all of these 5Ks include dog walks, so I still plan to check out a couple of these races.
April 27: Love A Stray Fur Fun 5k, Avon Lake
This 5K will benefit Love A Stray, an all volunteer rescue group in Avon. The 5k run starts at 9:00am and there will be dog walks every hour from 10 am-1:00pm. Register for the run/walk at www.loveastraydog.com.
May 3: K-9 5k, Edgewater Park
For this race you can pick from either the 5K run or the one mile Pooch Parade. All proceeds from the Ranger K-9 5K and Pooch Parade will benefit the K-9 Unit Fund, which provides specialized training and equipment for dogs. To register visit http://www.hermescleveland.com/roadracing/events/k9rangerrun.asp
May 10: 10th Annual New Leash on Life Dog Walk, Edgewater
This is a dog walk only (no 5k) to benefit The Northeast Ohio SPCA Pet Shelter. There will also be prizes, contests, 50/50 and raffles for local gift certificates and gift bags. For more info, visit: http://northeastohiospca.org/DogWalk_May_10__2014.php
June 1: Freedom Dog Fest 5K Run and 1.75 Mile Mutt Strut, Aurora
Proceeds from this race will benefit the Freedom Greyhound Rescue’s foster care program. There will also be vendors and an adoption fair. Visit http://www.zapevent.com/ListActivities.aspx?eventid=5219 for more info.
June 1: Greyt Race, Rocky River
Organized by Greyhound Adoption of Ohio, this 5K includes a one mile walk and a post race buffet at Market in Rocky River. To register visit: http://www.hermescleveland.com/roadracing/events/greytrace.asp
July 5: Muddy Paws, Peninsula
Bring your dog out for a run/walk in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The trail race is 5 or 10 miles, but there is a 2 mile course for runners with dogs. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefit the Humane Society of Greater Akron. http://www.westernreserveracing.com/events/muddy-paws/
July 19: Dirty Dog Run and Dog Wash, Avon Lake
This 5k run and one mile dog walk also includes a dog wash at the end. All proceeds will benefit Avon Lake U.C.C. Youth Mission Trips. For more information, visit: http://www.hermescleveland.com/roadracing/events/dirtydog
Also, just to note, most of the 5K races on Hermes’ site are dog-friendly, the ones listed above are the just the ones that benefit local animal rescue groups or have dog-specific activities.
